Work disability insurance

Many people suffer a decrease in income as a result of partial or full work disability. To protect you against this loss of income, the University has taken out general collective work and other disability insurance policy at ABP. You can take out supplementary work disability insurance via Loyalis. As a University employee, you will be offered an attractive premium discount.

How does it work?

If you are ill, the University will continue to pay your salary (partially or in full) for a period of two years. After this period, if reintegration fails, the UWV will decide to what extent you are incapacitated and whether you are eligible for benefits. This is done on the basis of the Work and Income on basis of Labour Capacity Act (Wet Werk & Inkomen naar Arbeidsvermogen, WIA).

Should the UWV award you WIA benefits, ABP can supplement these benefits with the ABP Work Disability Pension. However, these additional benefits are subject to limitations. You can take out supplemental work disability insurance via Loyalis to further supplement your income in case of work disability.

Applying for the work disability insurance

All University employees automatically take part in ABP’s collective basic insurance. The Loyalis supplementary work disability insurance is optional. If you have recently started working for Leiden University, you have six months from the start date of your contract to register with Loyalis without having to submit a medical statement. Your premium is paid via your salary.
