Occupational disability pension and supplementary insurance
In the event of full or partial occupational disability, your income may decrease. To help protect you against this risk, coverage for occupational disability is included in your standard ABP pension scheme. If you would like extra protection, you can take out supplementary occupation disability insurance with Loyalis at a discounted rate.
What happens if you are unable to work?
- If you are ill, the university will continue to pay all or part of your salary for a period of two years.
- If you are unable to return to work after this period, the UWV will decide to what extent you are incapacitated and whether you are eligible for benefits. This is based on the Work and Income according to Labour Capacity Act (Wet Werk & Inkomen naar Arbeidsvermogen, WIA).
- If the UWV awards you WIA benefits, you may also be eligible – under certain conditions – to an ABP Occupational Disability Pension. The UWV will inform ABP when you begin receiving WIA benefits.
- Around one and three months after the UWV’s assessment, you will receive a letter from ABP about your application for Occupational Disability Pension and/or premium-free pension accrual during your period of disability.
- You’ll need to arrange your application for your Occupational Disability Pension and/or premium-free pension accrual yourself via mijnABP.
Applying for occupational disability insurance
You can take out occupational disability insurance with Loyalis to supplement your income in the event of occupational disability. The Loyalis supplementary occupational disability insurance is optional and works as follows:
- You have six months from the start date of your contract with Leiden University to register with Loyalis without having to submit a medical statement.
- You can take out the insurance at a later date, but you will then have to submit a medical statement.
- The premium for your occupational disability insurance is deducted from your salary.
- You can choose different types of coverage (partial, full or a combination of both). You can calculate the premium for the different coverage types on the Loyalis website.
- As an employee of Leiden University, you will receive a 27% discount on your premium.
- Please note: You are only covered by the Loyalis occupational disability insurance if you pay social security contributions in the Netherlands. You can only take out this insurance under that condition. If you no longer pay social security contributions in the Netherlands, your occupational disability insurance with Loyalis will expire.
