The BIAS Project at the Artificial Intelligence and Labour Market Workshop
Carlotta Rigotti, Postdoc researcher at eLaw, participated in the Artificial Intelligence and Labour Market (AI&LM) Workshop hosted by Ghent University, to disseminate research findings from the BIAS project.
The workshop, hosted by Ghent University, brought together participants from academia and industry to explore how artificial intelligence is transforming the labour market and the field of human resources. It focused on the implications of AI for a range of stakeholders—including job seekers, recruiters, employment platforms, public bodies, policymakers, and training providers.
Within this context, Carlotta delivered two presentations.
First, she presented a co-authored draft developed with Eduard Fosch-Villaronga (eLaw, Leiden University), Antonio Aloisi (IE University), and Nastazja Potocka-Sionek (University of Luxembourg), which examines how AI systems used in recruitment and selection are currently regulated at the EU level. The presentation focused on the tension between protecting fundamental rights and mitigating risks, particularly in light of longstanding power imbalances in the workplace. Carlotta discussed how the AI Act regulates the design and deployment of workplace AI, and how its risk-based approach interacts with existing legal frameworks—including data protection, anti-discrimination, and product safety law.
Second, Carlotta presented findings from the BIAS project’s empirical and desk research, which involved extensive consultation with a wide range of stakeholders. This research aims to consolidate knowledge on the application of AI and the concept of fairness in the labour market, and forms the foundation for the development of key project initiatives, including the design of the Debiaser tool and the performance of the self-assessment list for trustworthy artificial intelligence (ALTAI).
