Skeletons and beer at ArcheoHotspot

How can you figure out if a skeleton is male or female? How did they brew beer in the distant past? Visitors to ArcheoHotspot could examine archaeological finds and taste prehistoric drinks at the Faculty of Archaeology.

Sharper upper edges of the eye sockets, no prominent bump on the back of the skull and a wider pelvis: these are just some of the features of a female skeleton. ArcheoHotspot visitors on Wednesday 22 October could even study a replica of a skeleton to discover whether it was male or female.

Other archaeological finds were real rather than replicas: Middle Eastern pottery, animal jaws and hundreds of mice teeth. Enthusiastic archaeologists were on hand to explain things to the visitors as they cleaned or identified objects in workshops, played an antique board game or worked with flint tools. They could also have their own finds identified by a panel of experts. And there was the chance to sample beer brewed outside with hot stones in a wooden trough.

This pop-up ArcheoHotspot was organised by the Faculty of Archaeology to celebrate the university’s 450th anniversary. There are ArcheoHotspots in other parts of the Netherlands too.
