The Special Chair for Central European Studies at Leiden presents a film at the “Eastern Neighbors” Film Festival in The Hague

On Sunday, November 9 2025, Prof. dr. Sarah Cramsey presented a film at the “Eastern Neighbors” Film Festival in The Hague.

“Obchod na Korze,” the Czechoslovak “new wave” film from 1965 which won an Academy Award for “Best Foreign Film,” immersed its viewers into a particular world, that of a small town in Slovakia in the early 1940s, as Jewish property became “Aryanized” and as Jewish townspeople were deported “elsewhere.” In front of a sold-out crowd at the Filmhuis Den Haag, Prof. dr. Cramsey provided historical context about the making of the film and how the Holocaust “happened” in Slovakia.

Founded in 2006, Eastern Neighbours Film Festival (ENFF) brings Dutch and international audiences closer to the cinema of their neighbours from Central, South and Southeast Europe. Each year, the festival presents outstanding recent films from countries with smaller but vibrant film industries — works that are rarely seen in the Netherlands. The festival takes place over five days each November at Filmhuis Den Haag, and continues throughout the year with ENFF On Tour screenings in the major Dutch cities.
