Kiem ’26 – ’27 round open

Applications for Leiden University’s interdisciplinary Kiem grant have opened. Academic and support staff can apply for a 10,000-euro grant for an interdisciplinary, interfaculty research, teaching or organisational initiative.

To apply, complete the online form by 17:00 hours on 11 May. This also provides guidance on the requirements and application procedure for a Kiem grant.

Through its Kiem programme (2023 2026), Leiden University is providing 25 annual seed grants to support the development of new interdisciplinary (interfaculty) research and teaching collaborations and encounters.

Kiem applications (€10.000 per project) must involve staff from at least two of the university’s faculties. Support professionals and units may also apply for a Kiem grant in collaboration with at least two faculties.

If more than 25 admissible applications are received, the grants will be awarded to projects in a lottery. The draw will be held at The Field, Leiden on Thursday 11 June.

The full timeline for Kiem applications is as follows:

Thursday 16 April, 12:00-13:00 hrs. - Online Q&A
Ask the Kiem team your questions during the online Q&A.

Monday 11 May, 17:00 hrs. - Deadline for Kiem applications
Online form closes at 17:00 hrs, and applications may no longer be submitted.

Tuesday 12 May - Wednesday 27 May - Admissibility review
Kiem team reviews whether applications meet the criteria. If applications do not (quite) meet the criteria, the applicants will be informed and have a single chance to submit an amended application before the start of June.

Thursday 11 June, 16:00 hrs. – Lottery
If more than 25 admissible applications have been submitted, fate will decide which projects receive a Kiem grant.
A grand draw will be held at The Field, Leiden.  All applicants are welcome to attend. They will be able to watch the lottery and will also have the chance to network with others.

Monday 15 June at the latest - Written results
The leaders of all projects, whether selected or not, will receive written notification of the results.
