New AI in Education e-learning puts learning behaviour before output
At the start of the new academic year, the new online module AI in Education has become available. It helps teachers from all faculties improve the learning process with, using didactically sound AI-assistants developed by the university itself. ‘Well-used AI should stimulate student engagement and curiosity rather than simply delivering automated shortcuts.’
The free e-learning includes two interactive modules (total duration: approx. 1.5 hours) that help educators work with curated AI approaches to place the process of genuine knowledge acquisition back at the heart of teaching. The course was developed by Marc Cleiren and Ingrid Samset of Leiden University and published by the Asian Development Bank Institute (ADBI).
Learning behaviour
Drawing on established pedagogical research, Marc Cleiren and Ingrid Samset demonstrate how Pedagogical AI Assistants (PAIA’s), rather than solving intellectual puzzles for students, stimulate their interest, engagement and skills. Cleiren: ‘Our students want to learn: that is why they joined the university in the first place. It is the learning behaviours that need stimulation, reward, and testing, instead of the learning products.’
