A weekend full of wonder at Weekend of Science in Leiden and The Hague
Examining wolf droppings, getting your brain moving or experiencing what it is like to make decisions as a police officer. During Weekend of Science, visitors of all ages discovered science in all sorts of ways in Leiden and The Hague.
Research is about more than experiments in a laboratory. It is also about language, law, health and how people live together. During Weekend of Science, researchers showed what they are working on and why their research is relevant to the everyday lives of people of all ages.
3 October: Science Fair in Leiden
What does a wolf eat? And how steady is your hand as a surgeon? During the celebrations marking Leiden’s Relief, visitors to the Science Fair had the chance to conduct their own investigations. They examined real wolf droppings and tested their surgical skills with a giant version of the game Operation.
There was also plenty of room for creativity and personal experiences. Visitors made a podcast or drawing about their favourite plant, for example, and played a life-size board game with short activities and games to discover what can help when things are not going well and the role that support from others can play.

On 4 October, Spui Campus in The Hague opened its doors to curious visitors of all ages. In mini-lectures, children tried their hand at being lawyers, discovered how physical activity can boost the brain and learned more about how NATO works.
Above all, there were plenty of opportunities for children to get involved themselves, from a maths workshop and anatomy Twister to a VR experience in which participants had to make decisions as police officers. There was no shortage of curiosity and enthusiasm. Throughout the afternoon, the Spui filled with children and parents eager to discover more about science. Weekend of Science at Spui Campus was a joint initiative involving the institutions based in the building: Leiden University, Delft University of Technology, the Open University and Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC).
