The interfaculty Theme Migration recommends this LDE conference

On Tuesday 3 November, the Leiden-Delft-Erasmus Centre for Governance of Migration and Diversity (LDE GMD) will be holding its annual conference. Would you like to forge connections within and outside the university on this theme? Then please register.

On Tuesday 3 November, the Leiden-Delft-Erasmus Centre Governance of Migration and Diversity (LDE GMD) will hold its annual conference at TU Delft. This year’s theme is “Design and Migration Societies: Co-creating Just Futures”. The conference thereby puts the role of research design at the centre of understanding and thinking along about migration issues. Researchers from Leiden University, including from the Faculty of Humanities and the Faculty of Law, will also speak in various sessions.

The importance of design

Migration is mainly studied from the perspective of public administration, law and security, history and economics. This edition of the annual LDE conference will make room for a discussion of what design, as an interdisciplinary way of thinking and acting, can contribute to our understanding of the governance of migration, diversity and inequality, and in particular to jointly shaping just futures and societies.

Three themes

To this end, three themes will be central. The first theme is ‘Designing for Migration Societies’, which questions how decisions in the organisation of our society, both in infrastructure and in the governance of our society, influence migration issues.

The second theme, ‘Designers for Migration Societies’, looks at the role of designers in the migration society. What role do they fulfil within different domains of justice, and how do they relate to the unequal distribution of responsibilities between states and institutions?

The third theme, ‘Design for Migration Societies’, concerns the role of design in conflict, migration and displacement. For example, how it contributes to the restoration of infrastructure of displaced communities.
