Keuzegids 2027: five ‘top programmes’ at Leiden University

Five bachelor’s programmes at Leiden University have been designated as ‘top programmes’. This is according to ‘Keuzegids universiteiten 2027’, a consumer guide to university programmes published on 5 November. The rankings are based on student opinions gathered in the National Student Survey.

Programmes are designated as ‘top programmes’ in Keuzegids if they receive 75 points or more. For Leiden University, this applies to the following programmes in Leiden and The Hague:

Three of these top programmes are from the Faculty of Humanities. Other programmes in the faculty also performed well but fell just short of the 75 points required to earn the top programme designation. Chinese Studies, Korean Studies, Ancient Near Eastern Studies and Religious Studies scored 71 points.

With 74 points, Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology from the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences fell just one point short of the designation.

The LUMC is also well represented: alongside the top programme Biomedical Sciences, Medicine (72 points) and Clinical Technology (71 points) also scored highly.

Broad universities

Like last year, Leiden University ranks fourth among the broad universities. The differences between the universities are small. This year, Leiden University received a total score of 59.5 points, three points fewer than the number one (Utrecht University) and 0.5 points fewer than the universities in second (Nijmegen) and third (Groningen) place.

Rector’s response

Rector Sarah de Rijcke is proud of Leiden University’s Keuzegids results: ‘It’s great to see that students really value our programmes. The five top programmes and the other high-scoring programmes show that we work together to provide high-quality education. This is a compliment to all our teaching and support staff. Congratulations to everyone who has contributed to this achievement.’

What information does Keuzegids provide?

Alongside student evaluations from the National Student Survey (NSE) 2026, Keuzegids bases its scores on the following data:

  • Student success indicators: do students progress to the second year? Do they obtain their degree within four years?
  • The most recent enrolment figures per programme
  • Current labour market data for the various degree programmes.
