About the project

The Barrier-Free Studying project embodies Leiden University’s statement of intent on inclusive education, which was issued in 2018.

This statement of intent was prompted by The Netherland’s ratification of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The convention aims to ‘promote, protect and ensure the full and equal enjoyment of all human rights and fundamental freedoms by all persons with disabilities’. The convention recognises the importance of individual autonomy and independence for persons with a disability, including the freedom to make their own choices.

One of the convention’s focal points is to create an inclusive environment in which people with disabilities can find their way without third-party assistance. Other focal points are student participation and knowledge building amongst staff and fellow students.

The project was launched in spring 2020 and is overseen by SEA/Student Support Services.
