GenAI use by teachers: practical applications and educational innovation

Whereas every teacher has been confronted with the emergence of GenAI use by students, there are substantial differences between the extent to which teachers use GenAI themselves. From minor practical applications to opportunities for integration and educational innovation, below you can find an overview of resources to get you started from within Leiden University and beyond.

Integrating GenAI into your education

Please always make sure to first familiarize yourself with regulations and guiding principles of the university, faculty and your institute/programme (see Guidelines and policy). If you find something particularly helpful, don't hesitate to send an email so that it can be shared here and help other teachers. Please be mindful of potential differences in guidelines and policies when it comes to advice and guidance from other organisations.

LUChat and LUCA

LUChat is a secure and private GenAI environment developed together with the ISSC as part of FGGAi. As FGGA staff, you have access through your ULCN account. You can read more about LUChat, how it works, why it is safe and secure, why it is different to working with other commercially available AI tools, and what this means for how we work with AI at FGGA in this e-module. FGGA students also have access to LUChat; if you are allowing or encouraging students to use GenAI for certain purposes in your course, have them use LUChat.

The university also offers lecturers the opportunity to experiment with the secure and protected AI platform LUCA. LUCA can be used to create customized chatbots for students within their courses. For more information about using the AI platform LUCA, please visit this page.
