ANS

For administering exams, Leiden University uses the ANS program. Teachers can use ANS to: - Create exams - Grade exams - Create practice tests - Add a grading scheme to exams

Creating Exams

There are three ways an exam can be administered to students in ANS:

  • BYOD
  • Chromebooks
  • Paper2Scan

BYOD
BYOD, or Bring Your Own Device, is a digital exam that can be taken on location. Students bring their own laptops and log in to ANS.
For security, the Schoolyear program is used in ANS. This prevents students from having other tabs open during the exam.

Chromebooks
Chromebooks are provided by the university on location for taking exams in ANS. Students do not need to bring their own laptops but use a university-provided Chromebook instead.

Paper2Scan
Paper2Scan is a paper-based exam that is distributed to students. It is printed by the OSC (via ANS) and delivered to the exam location. After the exam, the OSC collects the papers and scans them so they can be graded digitally in ANS.
The OSC asks everyone about their preference and is happy to provide guidance.

It is possible to include open-end questions, multiple-choice questions, and case studies in an exam.

Grading Exams

ANS allows digital exams to be graded immediately after completion. For paper exams, it takes approximately 72 hours before they can be graded in ANS. Grading in ANS can be done by multiple teachers simultaneously. Exams can be graded per student or per question. Once the exams have been graded, FLO can assist with transferring the results to Brightspace, where the final grades are recorded. This request can be submitted by emailing FLO@fgga.leidenuniv.nl

Creating Practice Tests

Practice exams can be made available for students to prepare for the actual exam. Each student receives access to ANS at the beginning of the academic year to complete these practice tests.

Adding a Grading Scheme to an Exam

For all exams, a grading scheme must be created in order to assign final grades.
For example, multiple-choice questions can be set up so that the correct answer automatically awards the points. It is also possible to automatically assign partial points if a specific phrase is given as an answer.
