Notification to staff: possible demonstration faculty building

23 November 2023

Today, Thursday 23 November, the action group End Fossil LU/TUD has announced the occupation of one of Leiden University's premises. This is part of an international wave of local protests by students and staff demanding the severance of ties between universities and the fossil fuel industry.

In principle, demonstrations are permitted in our buildings provided demonstrators adhere to the applicable rules. The main priority is that our research and teaching are disturbed as little as possible.

The action group may choose to occupy the Kamerlingh Onnes Building. In consultation with the Decentral Crisis Team, we have decided to inform you briefly in advance about the potential consequences.

Teaching

In principle, the faculty will give the action group space to protest. If they disrupt teaching and enter a lecture hall or classroom, stay calm and welcome them. The teacher can decide to stop the lecture or seminar. The Emergency Response Team (BHV), University Facilities Department (UFB), and Decentral Crisis Team (DCT) are ready to manage the situation as smoothly as possible (available via 7512).
