Are you a PhD candidate, researching topics related to Future Materials & Technology, One Health, Sustainability, or Data Science & Artificial Intelligence? Want to share how your research is making a difference? If so, enter the Una Europa PhD Impact competition. The deadline is 23.59 CEST on 14 September 2025.

What is the PhD Impact Award?

The PhD Impact Award celebrates research that is making a difference, now or in the future. It encourages PhD candidates to reflect on how their work contributes to society and helps shape a better world.

Communicating the impact of your research is a vital skill, and this competition is your chance to practice and shine.

Who can apply

All PhD candidates at Una Europa universities, including Leiden University, are eligible to enter. You can apply at any stage of your PhD, right up until your defence.

What's in it for me?

Winners will:

  • Join an online science communication workshop;
  • Present their research at one of Europe’s leading science festivals: Berlin Science Week.
  • Network with other scientists and peers.

Travel and accommodation costs will be provided by Una Europa. Selected entries will also be published on the Una Europa website. 

How can I apply?

Use this form to submit your application (in English).

The form will ask you to reflect on the impact or potential impact of your research, for example on society, the economy, the environment, on health, on education, on technology, on culture or on policy.

Deadline: 23.59 CEST on 14 September 2025.

Winners will be selected by mid-September and must be available to travel to Berlin for the weekend of 1-2 November.
