Executive Board decides to sell short-stay accommodation at Kloksteeg 9
Leiden University provides temporary housing for international PhD candidates and guest researchers across the city of Leiden. Until recently, this included three self-contained ‘university lodges’ for short-term rental at Kloksteeg 9. However, new legislation prompted the Executive Board to decide, on 5 November 2025, to sell the building.
For many years, Kloksteeg 9 was the first housing solution for international guest researchers and PhD candidates arriving in Leiden. But the ban on short-term rental agreements and the introduction of the Landlords Good Practices Act (Wet goed verhuurderschap) mean short-term lettings are no longer permitted in this building. Alternatives such as a short-stay rental licence have proven unfeasible. Since current policy leaves no room for exceptions, the Board has decided to sell Kloksteeg 9.
