Open atelier at KOG: Artist Stefan Hoffmann to create screen print

19 March 2026

Internationally renowned graphic artist Stefan Hoffmann will be artist-in-residence at the KOG over the coming months. Leiden Law School has asked him to create a unique screen print design on the transparent wall along the C0 corridor using motifs, patterns and images to reflect the faculty’s academic identity.

Hoffmann does not yet have a clear design in his mind. ‘I’m starting from scratch, with no preconceived ideas or images. I’ll let these come to me as I’m working,’ he explains.

Glass wall
Hoffmann was born in Germany and has worked on many projects around the world. He is known for his in-situ projects – creating art on the spot. The challenge with this project is that it’s technically difficult to screen-print on a wall that is built with glass blocks. ‘It’s built using many separate tiles, so I’ll have to take that into account in my design and the technique I’ll use.’

Sources of inspiration
The screen print will be created after careful research, a familiar process for Hoffmann since he is an experienced scholar. He will draw on the rich history of the faculty and the university, as well as on the stories behind the KOG and Old Observatory, two illustrious buildings that house Leiden Law School.

Open process, open conversations
Everyone is welcome to come along and watch the artist at work. Hoffmann is keen to create the design while conversing with students and staff. Openness and transparency will be important elements in the process.

Open atelier
From this week on, the artist will set up his atelier in the C0 corridor. So, if you pass by you might see workbenches and screen-printing equipment, as well as pots of ink. Hoffmann realises that classes will be taught in the adjacent rooms while he is working and he will take this into account. Curious? Feel free to drop by and take a look.

Plans to upgrade C0 corridor

The faculty plans to upgrade the KOG’s C0 corridor, bringing art and science together again while making use of the building’s architecture. Academic identity, sustainability and authenticity are core values.
