Rising prices have hit Europeans over the past year, especially those in most need. With inflation running high, especially for energy and food, many worry about the value of our currency. What can – and should – the European Central Bank (ECB), as guardian of the euro, do about it? How can it get inflation back under control without bringing the economy to its knees? And how does the ECB – as the independent central bank for the 20 euro area countries– deal with the inevitable controversies that surrounds its decisions? In this talk, Gabriel Glöckler, Principal Communications Adviser at the ECB, answers these and other questions around the euro area economy and the ECB’s policy which, one way or another, affects us all.
About the speaker
Gabriel Glöckler is a seasoned central banker, economist and communicator. Since 1999, he has served the European Central Bank in a variety of senior roles. As a Principal Adviser, he is currently part of the senior leadership of the Bank’s communications department, where he spearheads innovation to communicate ECB policy to the wider public more effectively. Prior to this, Gabriel led the ECB’s General Secretariat and its European Union department. He also spent five years as chief of staff to the ECB’s Vice-President and worked as an economist. Gabriel studied Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Oxford University and holds a Master’s degree from the College of Europe in Bruges, where he has also been a Visiting Professor for the last decade.
