The year 2025 is a very special one. As you probably know, Leiden University is celebrating its 450th anniversary. But what makes 2025 extra festive is that our very own Department of English language and culture will be 75 years old this year!
We would love to celebrate this joyous occasion with you, our students, alumni, colleagues and friends of the Department. In an action-packed programme on Saturday 24 May 2025, we will look back but also forwards, underlining the importance of English Studies, of our degree programmes in English language and culture, and of language and culture studies in general.
Opening by the Ambassador of the United Kingdom
The festivities will take place in the heart of the Leiden Humanities Campus, the Lipsius Building, and will be opened by the Ambassador of the United Kingdom, Joanna Roper, CMG. In her opening remarks, she will address the importance of English language and culture in light of Anglo-Dutch relations.
The full-day programme will include short lectures by current staff, musical and dramatic intermezzos, an alumni panel and a film. And of course, there will be ample opportunity to catch up with your former fellow students and tutors and to meet new people.

Registration is open
Registration is open! Registration is € 30 for alumni and (former) members of staff / € 15 for students and includes coffee breaks, lunch and drinks afterwards. Deadline for registration is 22 May.
