Refugees and Migrants in the Americas, an exhibition by Colombian artist Edgar Álvarez, invites visitors to reflect on the realities of human mobility through a unique combination of miniature clay figures, photography, and claymation. Employees and students can now see this exhibition for themselves in the Kamerlingh Onnes Building.
The exhibition traces different stages of migration across the Americas, highlighting the resilience, courage, and humanity of refugees and migrants. By transforming clay into a powerful artistic medium, Álvarez encourages visitors to look beyond statistics and connect with the human stories and landscapes that shape migration experiences.
Connected to the short film Darién: Sueños de barro, the exhibition also features the film's teaser and exclusive behind-the-scenes content, offering visitors a deeper insight into the creative process and the project's message. The teaser can be viewed by activating the screen behind the clay figurines.
The exhibition is funded by the LUF through the proposal 'Visible routes, invisible lives: sparking empathy through art and research', and is the result of an interfaculty collaboration between Amalia Campos Delgado (Leiden Law School, Van Vollenhoven Institute) and Natalia Donner (Faculty of Humanities, International Studies). It demonstrates the power of art to connect audiences with personal stories of migration, fostering empathy, reflection, and dialogue.
The exhibition runs from 21 July to 22 August.
