Are you thinking about studying at a university college and are you wondering what studying at Leiden University College The Hague (LUC) is like? Would you like to delve a bit deeper into our programme and have a first hand experience of a sample class? Then make sure to join us for our Experience Day!
What to expect?
The day is crafted for those students who want to experience the programme, so the emphasis is on exactly that: joining a sample class, chatting with our staff and students and exploring the campus. We recommend that you join an open day session before coming to the experience day, or if that is not possible, to check out some of LUC's videos on Instagram (listed on the right hand side).

Some notes about the programme of the day:
- You can choose to join a campus tour at the start of the day (Round 1: 13:30 - 14:00) or at the end of the day, during the information market (Round 2: 17:15 - 17:45)
- Our sample classes are small scale sample classes and we want them to mimic a real class as much as possible. For that reason Parents and caregivers will be offered an alternative session during the sample classes.

Sample classes
We have three sample classes availble to choose from. You will choose your sample class upon arrival.
"Climate Change: Floods and Droughts" by dr. Joeri Reinders
The recent IPPC reports tell us – again – that climate change is one of the most pressing issues of our time and will affect modern human life globally. Locally extreme climate events such as droughts and storms already pose serious challenges to society – also here in the Netherlands. In this class we will discuss the pros and cons of several adaptation strategies to reduce extreme weather risks, such as geoengineering and nature-based solutions.
"Anticorruption: should we be doing it?" by dr. Diana Branduse | Full
- This class is full! -
For the past two decades, international institutions like the U.N., the World Bank, the European Union or the IMF have invested huge amounts of resources in promoting anticorruption and good governance. Their work has led to the creation of anticorruption agencies in many countries in the world and to a vast array of associated institutional mechanisms such as conflict of interest legislation or ombudsman offices. What is the result of all these efforts when it comes to reducing the highly complex problem of corruption? And how do we define a Global Challenge like corruption when we design these policy interventions? Should we be doing anticorruption in the current form, or do we need new approaches? This class will give a brief introduction to answering these questions.
"Simpson's Paradox: how appearances can be deceiving" by dr. Lucie Zicha
Through recent real-world examples, we’ll uncover how seemingly straightforward data can be misleading and how understanding some key concepts of statistical reasoning is crucial for making informed decisions about complex social problems. We will discuss some concrete tips that will help you recognize when data may be deceiving and how to interpret it correctly. The best part - no prior knowledge of statistics is necessary.
Can parents join the experience day?
We understand that parents and caregives play a key role in the University Exploration process. Parents are welcome to join this event, and are able to join most programme elements. However, parents & caregivers will be offered an alternative information session during the small scale sample classes. The sample class will mimic a real university setting as much as possible, and you will therefore join without your parents.
