Radical Spotlights in Economic Anthropologies

Radical Spotlights in Economic Anthropologies is a collaboration of the Society for Economic Anthropology (SEA) in the AAA and the Network Anthropology of Economy in the EASA. The series were initiated by Andreas Streinzer, University of Vienna, and Erik Bähre, Leiden University. The online seminars spotlight critical research in economic anthropology across the globe twice a year on Zoom. The seminars are free and open to all, including scholars who are not a member of SEA or EASA.

Objectives

The aims of Radical Spotlights are to increase insight into and knowledge produced by Economic Anthropologies. The plural (anthropologies) highlights that anthropologists work from within different paradigms, approaches, positionalities, epistemologies and that anthropologists around the world analyze the economics in the everyday life of people, but also reflect on how their own research is always situated within specific institutional, political-economic, and cultural contexts. ‘Radical Spotlights in Economic Anthropologies’ thus reflects upon the hierarchies of knowledge production where anthropologists are inevitably part of. It contributes to our understanding of the diversity and dynamics of economic practices, experiences, institutional arrangements, and power dynamics. This includes reflecting on how these are part of the research caried out by economic anthropologists.

The Spotlights in Economic Anthropologies contributes to this by stimulating a conversation on the diversity of research approaches in economic anthropology around the world; strengthening networks among economic anthropologists, especially members of EASA and SEA; creating a stimulating environment where one can contrast different approaches regarding a theme or region; reflecting on our own research practices and the hierarchies of knowledge production; showcasing how economic anthropology contributes to our understanding of complex social, political and cultural issues.
