Joris Larik awarded fellowship at Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study
Dr. Joris Larik, Assistant Professor at LUC The Hague, has been selected for a fellowship at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study (NIAS) in Amsterdam. During his fellowship, Larik will conduct research on a fundamental question: Was Brexit worth it when it comes to striking trade deals around the world?
For some, the end of the UK's membership is cause for celebration. ‘Global Britain’ can set out to strike lucrative trade deals around the world. For others, it is precisely the EU’s collective economic weight that pays off in international treaty negotiations and makes EU membership worthwhile in an increasingly challenging global environment. What these opposing views have in common is that they tend to rely on narratives rather than evidence-based research. Brexit, an unprecedented event in the EU’s history, presents an opportunity for testing the added value of the Union for its Member States and citizens in the world.
The NIAS Fellowship allows Larik to work on his project for a period of five months in the academic year 2021/22. He will become part of a community of independent thinkers, in a collaborative environment where the space is created to ask new questions beyond disciplinary boundaries. NIAS Fellows are selected through a highly competitive external review process on the basis of the quality of the research proposal.
