New collaboration between CWTS, Science Europe, and the Know Center

Science Europe has selected CWTS at Leiden University and the Know Center (Graz, Austria) to conduct a study into the links between open science and research cultures.

The new collaboration between CWTS, Science Europe, and the Know Center results from a call for tenderlaunched in November 2024 as a follow-up to Science Europe's 2024 survey on open science and research assessment. The project seeks to provide an academic context to key findings from the survey on open science, its implementation through research assessment and monitoring, and its role in contributing to the evolution of research cultures.

Scoping Study

As part of the project, a scoping study will be performed of relevant academic literature across the open science elements that were identified in the 2024 Science Europe report. This will be used as the basis for a review of how open science impacts and contributes to research cultures. It will look at the reported effects of open science policies and practices, as well as their practical implementation through research assessment processes and monitoring exercises. It will additionally link insights to key descriptors and drivers of research cultures, such as the expectations, behaviours, and attitudes of research communities.

Preliminary findings of the scoping study will be presented to members of the Science Europe Working Groups on Research Culture and Open Science during a members-only workshop on 25 June. A public webinar will be organised in October to present the refined findings, as well as Science Europe's next steps in this priority area.

The study protocol has been pre-registered at OSF Registries.
