eLaw hosts second BIAS capacity-building session on AI in the workplace
On 20 November 2025, eLaw hosted the second capacity-building session of the BIAS project, coinciding with the city’s first snowfall of the year. The training brought together HR practitioners, scholars, consultants, and policymakers to discuss the opportunities and challenges of using AI systems in the labour market.
Eduard Fosch-Villaronga and Carlotta Rigotti, together with Maria Giovanna Zamburlini and Simona Lo Giudice (Smart Venice), guided participants through a programme combining lectures and interactive board games developed with the European Trade Union Institute. The session covered key topics such as bias and intersectionality in workplace AI, current legal and policy developments, including the GDPR, the AI Act, and the newly announced Digital Omnibus Act, and the social implications of AI systems already deployed in employment contexts. The board games enabled participants to explore long-term scenarios and develop solutions collaboratively, strengthening their capacity to engage in social dialogue on algorithmic management.
The event concluded with lively discussions and new connections. With the BIAS final conference scheduled for next September in Leiden, the session marked another important step towards fostering responsible and inclusive AI in the workplace.
