From medieval England to multilingual AI: seed funding grants launch 15 new Una Europa projects
What do the cultural heritage of Medieval England, multilingual healthcare AI tools and emotional attention bias in orangutans have in common? All are the focus of projects supported by grants from our local Una Europa team.
This year, fifteen Leiden University colleagues received grants of up to €15,000 to explore emerging research questions, to support research visits to Una Europa partner universities, and to create interdisciplinary networks and training materials – all in collaboration with academics in other Una Europa universities.
Groundwork for larger initiatives
One project aims to redesign introductory physics labs to make them more student-centered, research-informed, and relevant to emerging scientific fields. Linguists will explore how people who speak a second language navigate AI tools and look at how AI tools can be used responsibly in multilingual healthcare settings. Researchers will also investigate emotional attention bias in orangutans, and will build international networks focused on global governance, the cultural heritage of medieval England and kidney disease.
All projects have the potential to lay the groundwork for larger initiatives, such as future national and European funding opportunities, and link with one of Una Europa's six focus areas: Cultural Heritage, Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, Europe and the World, Future Materials and Technologies, One Health and Sustainability.

What can Una Europa mean for you?
Thanks to Una Europa Seed Funding, Leiden University researchers have so far participated in 40 funded projects with Una Europa partners. This is just one of the many ways in which the Una Europa alliance helps our community to collaborate across disciplines and borders.
The alliance also offers many other opportunities to all employees and students. Think, for example, of interdisciplinary training sessions, summer schools and exchanges. Visit the Una Europa webpage to learn what the alliance can mean for you.
