Security on the campus

Leiden University uses Security staff for access control and large or sensitive events.

Security staff wear a uniform, although some non-uniformed Security staff will still be used until April 2026. However, in the case of personal protection, we will continue to use Security staff who are not immediately identifiable as such (non-uniformed); they watch for irregular behaviour that may indicate a threat to the person under protection.

Why are there LU-Card checks?

The LU-Card is more than just a student card or staff card: it is an access pass that helps to maintain a safe, secure learning and work environment. The checks ensure that only authorised people enter a building or facility. You must always use your own LU-Card and never lend it to anyone else, to prevent misuse. Access checks are used on the basis of risk analysis. The greater the risk of an incident, the more reason for security measures. It is compulsory to show a LU-Card on request in all parts of the university. However the extent to which this actually happens is different per building. You may also find that checks are introduced in a building where they are not usually made, for example due to a large event. It is therefore important to always have your LU-Card with you.

What are the powers to look inside a bag?

Security staff or other staff members of Leiden University are not permitted to simply look inside a bag. In some cases, you can be asked to show the contents of your bag or not to take your bag into a room, for example when entering an examination room or an event. A measure of this kind will always be announced in advance. A bag check can only take place if the owner voluntarily gives permission for this or if a house rule makes it compulsory. In the case of serious suspicion of a criminal offence, the police can be called in.

What should I do if I have a complaint about Security?

Physical security measures are taken with care. Nevertheless, it may happen that students or staff feel they have been treated unfairly. This can always be reported to the Security Affairs department. Complaints are taken seriously and investigated. It is important to report the incident soon after it occurs, giving the date, time, location and as many other details as possible. As part of a learning approach and to help us make changes, it is very important that people report such incidents.
Another option for students (or alumni) in the case of improper behaviour is to submit a complaint to the Ombuds Officer. The Ombuds Officer has an independent position within the university and a duty of confidentiality with regard to your complaint. Staff members may contact the confidential counsellor for confidential advice if they encounter unacceptable behaviour or malpractice.
