Communications and events officer for 3 days a week (0,6 fte, 22,8 hours per week)

The African Studies Centre Leiden (ASCL) is looking for an enthusiastic Communications Officer to organize events and help share our research, education, and publications with the world. You will be part of a dynamic and internationally oriented research institute.

What you’ll be doing

  • Organizing ASCL events, such as  (hybrid) seminars. This includes coordinating speakers, ensuring publicity, and providing technical support 
  • In close collaboration with the communications advisor: implementing ASCL’s communication strategy 
  • Managing and planning the ASCL’s presence on social media 
  • Creating the annual report
  • Promoting and managing the ASCL publications 
  • Giving information and guidance to visitors and journalists
  • Setting up and maintaining an ASCL alumni network

Your profile 

  • You have at least 3 years of experience as a communications professional, preferably in an academic environment;
  • You have completed a higher professional (HBO), or university degree or comparable working and thinking level; 
  • You have an affinity with Africa and science;
  • You have excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
  • You are a proactive organizer and can work both independently and as part of a team;
  • You know how to reach different target groups;
  • You are fluent, both verbally and in writing, in Dutch, English, and preferably also in French;
  • You have extensive experience with various communication tools, content management systems, social media, and design programmes such as InDesign and Canva;

Our institute

The African Study Centre Leiden is the only multidisciplinary academic knowledge institute in the Netherlands completely dedicated to the study of Africa. It has a renowned collection in the African Library that is open to the public. The ASCL is an interfaculty institute of Leiden University. The ASCL offers a lively, interdisciplinary academic environment with colleagues from backgrounds including anthropology, history, economics, demography, political science, language and literature studies, geography, and business administration. The ASCL research and collections and documentation represent a diversity of topics and countries, and we are active in the field of education in minors, (research) master’s programs, and postgraduate courses.

What we offer: 

A varied job in an informal, academic environment. You will be offered a temporary contract for a period of one year, for 22.8 hours per week (0.6 FTE). The contract will be converted to a permanent contract after satisfactory performance. The contract is in accordance with the Collective Labor Agreement for Dutch Universities. Depending on your education and experience, you will earn a minimum of € 3,382 and a maximum of € 5,057 gross per month for full-time employment (scale 8 or 9 CAO NLU).
 
Leiden University offers excellent terms of employment. These include a year-end bonus (8.3%), vacation allowance (8%), training facilities, and 100% reimbursement of commuting costs by public transport (second class). You can have flexible working hours so that you can combine work and private life effectively.
