Rubrics
A rubric is a tool for teachers to grade students' work and give them feedback based on clearly defined criteria.
A rubric consists of...
- a specific set of criteria,
- rating scales/grading levels and
- indicators for each criteria and level.
Advantages of using a rubric
A rubric makes grading a process, product or activity easier and more transparent.
- Sharing a rubric with students beforehand helps them identify what is expected of them and how they will be graded;
- It is easier to justify and communicate grades and feedback to yoru students;
- Multiple graders use the same indicators to grade students' work which helps with inter-grader reliability.
What should be in your rubric?
The criteria, levels and indicators of your rubric of course depend on the context and assignment you want to use it for. When you want to design your own rubric, we advise you to contact us via seeds@science.leidenuniv.nl. We can check whether we already have a rubric in our database that you can use or adjust, or help you create a rubric from scratch.
Build or import a rubric into a tool
Once you know what should be in your rubric, you can often build or import it into the tool you are using for the assignment.
Consult the screensteps for building rubrics in different tools.
