Example of Kieran's work

From 28 September 2023, the art of artist Kieran Smith will be on display on the 1st floor in the Pieter de la Court building.

Kieran Smith grew up in South Africa and is a figurative painter with an interest in portraits and the human form. When he was studying Kieran was inspired by the bold, often messy techniques of the German expressionists and artists such as Emil Nolde and Frank Auerbach. He began experimenting with materials that could potentially do more than the acrylic paint that he was using at the time. This led him to sands, soils and industrial adhesives which in turn demanded new techniques and processes; finding ways to subdue crude materials that were not designed or intended for painting.

Each work then possesses a sharp tension between the creative steps (proportions, lines, composition, colours, interpretation of the subject) and the technical manipulation of the materials (sand, industrial adhesives, water, paint, canvas). The resulting muted colours and rough textures are startlingly beautiful.
