Societal impact

You can apply various means to increase your societal impact: through interaction with professionals, the commercial sector or general audiences. The University can support you in this process in a number of ways.

Interaction with the professional field

This may take the form of

  • Courses

    You may be able to join existing Leiden initiatives such as the Centre for Professional Learning or the Legal PAO. The Centre for Professional Learning develops and offers courses and training programmes for highly educated professionals in the public sector. The Legal PAO offers courses for legal experts.
  • Massive Online Open Course or Private Small Online Course

    The Online Learning Lab / Centre for Innovation will be glad to help you develop online lectures and videos.
  • Network for life science, health, and technology partners

    Leiden University is a member of Medical Delta, a network of knowledge institutions, care institutions and companies that are active in the field of life sciences, health, and technology. For more information, see the Luris Knowledge Partnering team.
  • Combining work and PhD

    If you wish to offer experienced ‘knowledge workers’ the opportunity to obtain a Leiden PhD degree, please contact the Dual PhD Centre.
  • Establishing an endowed chair

    If you wish to increase the University’s teaching and research potential by creating an endowed chair, you can read about the procedure here (pdf).   • Optimise your personal profile page on the University website

    Write an introduction to your research/teaching in Dutch or in English for a general audience and post in on your personal profile page on the University website. Use keywords to specify your expertise (this makes you easier to find). Don’t forget to also list your subsidiary activities and professional publications.
  • Take part in Leiden University group blogs

    You can share your knowledge and expertise on one of the many Leiden University group blogs (on themes such as Africa, Islam, Legal, Terrorism, Linguists, Anthropology and Psychology).

Interaction with the commercial sector

This may take the form of:

  • Collaboration with companies

    Leiden University has a long tradition of partnering with local, Dutch and international companies. You can make use of the power of this network, whether for informal connections, internship or research positions for your students, bilateral Research Development projects, or consortium alliances with complex public/private funding structures. The Luris Business Development team will gladly assist you.
  • Leiden Bio Science Park Network

    The Leiden Bio Science Park (LBSP) is the largest life sciences knowledge cluster in the Netherlands. It is home to a great many companies and knowledge institutions in the biotechnology sector. Come to one of the TechTalks that Luris organises six times a year in collaboration with LBSP, and enjoy the opportunity to mingle with your peers in an informal setting.
  • Regulations on Working for Third Parties

  • Entrepreneurship

    Entrepreneurial researchers can bridge the gap between research and the commercial sector. Leiden University’s Knowledge Exchange Office Luris supports researchers in their entrepreneurial ambitions by supervising the planning of spin-off companies and managing the Entrepreneurial Programs Enterprise Leiden Fund and UNIIQ.   • Meeting place for innovation and entrepreneurship

    PLNT community, the Leiden centre for entrepreneurship and innovation, is a place where innovative students, entrepreneurs, investors, lecturers and companies can meet and inspire one another.
  • Luris training programmes and workshops

    Luris organises various workshops, training programmes and events on knowledge exchange, research funding, collaboration with third parties and other initiatives. Go to the Luris website to remain up to date.
  • Legal support

    Luris offers legal support with respect to:

    If you wish to publish your research results and are wondering about intellectual property aspects, come to the Intellectual Property training programme offered by the University Knowledge Exchange Office.

Interaction with government and NGOs

This may take the form of

  • Collaboration with the Municipality of Leiden

    The Municipality of Leiden and the University are closely interrelated. By acting in strategic concert, we can really put Leiden on the map. In this context, the University and the Municipality collaborate in the Leiden, City of Science project. For more information, please contact Marianne Walgreen.
  • Partnerships in the region: Economy071 Network

    Leiden University is in touch with a number of partners in the Leiden region, such as municipalities, the University of Applied Sciences, the Regional Training Centre (ROC) and various trade associations.   • Partnerships in and with the Municipality of The Hague

    With Campus The Hague, Leiden University has developed a close relationship with the Municipality of The Hague and The Hague organisations. To allow Campus The Hague to expand further, the University recently signed a collaboration agreement with the Municipality of The Hague.   • Digital innovations in the field of peace and justice: HumanityX
  • HumanityX is a partnership between the Municipality of The Hague and the Leiden University Centre for Innovation on innovations in peace and justice. For more information, please contact the Centre for Innovation.
  • Network of innovation labs

    The Centre for Innovation in The Hague is a University think tank that investigates and creates innovative projects at the interface between education, technology and society. This centre is linked to a large network of researchers, the public and private sector, and NGOs. At the Centre for Innovation, researchers collaborate on projects in the form of labs.
