Neurodiversity in the workplace: a win-win for all

13 June 2025

On Monday 16 June on Neurodiversity Day, Leiden University raises the Neurodiversity flag, a powerful signal of recognition. Neurodiversity highlights the unique talents of individuals with neurological differences such as autism and ADHD. This diversity is a strength in the workplace.

Neurodivergent employees often excel in pattern recognition, creativity, focus and analytical ability. To harness this potential, an inclusive environment is crucial.

What can colleagues and managers do?

They can inform themselves, communicate clearly, respect individual needs and avoid assumptions. Managers can provide structure, consider flexibility, communicate explicitly, give constructive feedback and recognise strengths. Training and awareness within teams are essential.

What can neurodivergent colleagues do themselves?

Know your strengths and challenges. Communicate openly about your needs and ask for clear instructions. Create an optimal workplace and develop strategies for sensory overload. Seek mentors and don't be afraid to ask for help. Focus on your talents and take good care of yourself.

Platform Neurodiversity Leiden University

The Platform Neurodiversity Leiden University is a valuable resource for neurodivergent students and staff. They offer information, support and the opportunity to exchange experiences. Feel free to contact them for advice and connection within the university community.

Let's work together towards a working environment where everyone's unique contribution is valued. Recognising neurodiversity is not only equitable, but also leads to more innovative and successful organisations.
