Gianclaudio Malgieri Appointed Co-Rapporteur for International Project on Biometrics Governance
Dr Gianclaudio Malgieri, Associate Professor at eLaw – Center for Law and Digital Technologies, has been appointed Co-Rapporteur for a new joint project of the European Law Institute (ELI) and the American Law Institute (ALI): 'Principles for the Governance of Biometrics'. The project aims to formulate a set of principles to guide the regulation and use of biometric technologies.
Dr Malgieri will serve as Co-Rapporteur alongside Professor Nita Farahany (Duke University). The project is set to run for two years and will result in the publication of a book outlining the developed principles. It will involve collaboration between experts from different jurisdictions and disciplines, with the aim of addressing the legal, ethical, and societal challenges posed by the increasing use of biometric systems.
Biometric technologies – such as facial recognition, fingerprinting, and behavioural or emotional detection – are used in a range of public and private contexts. Their deployment raises a variety of legal and policy questions related to data protection, surveillance, and discrimination. The ALI-ELI project seeks to provide a structured framework to support governance and policymaking in this area.
More information about the project is available on the European Law Institute website.
