Shared transferable skills

The development of the 13 transferable skills stems from one of the ambitions in Leiden University’s educational vision. The shared framework is intended to support the further development of skills‑based education. Read more about the transferable skills.

For teachers

Do you incorporate one or more of the transferable skills into your course? You can use the general descriptions and behavioural indicators for support. On the right side of this page, you will find an elaboration of the skills and a guide for formulating learning objectives related to them. This framework can also serve as a useful tool for examining skills development at the curriculum level, for example by developing learning trajectories. Skill'Ed

Skill’Ed is a university-wide Brightspace environment featuring short, practical modules that enable students to independently develop transferable skills, such as academic writing, presenting, collaborating and conducting research. Lecturers can integrate these modules into their teaching and refer students to them in assignments and feedback. In this way, Skill’Ed provides students with additional support without requiring a complete redesign of a course.

The platform is still under development (read more about the Grassfields project) and will be rolled out in phases from the 2026-2027 academic year onwards. Lecturers interested in using Skill’Ed can contact their faculty’s teaching support team to discuss opportunities to participate in a pilot and find out which modules are available.
