Antique telescope moved to the atrium of the Gorlaeus Building

No joke: on 1 April, the antique Van de Wall telescope was relocated to the atrium of the Gorlaeus Building. Have you spotted it yet?

The old telescope used to stand in the Huygens building, which housed the Leiden Observatory until last year’s move to the new Gorlaeus Building. Now, the telescope—resembling a cannon on a tripod—has found a beautiful and prominent new spot: right next to the grand staircase in the atrium.

The movers transported the telescope across the campus square to its new home in the Gorlaeus Building. The antique telescope, estimated to have been built in the 1750s, was once the largest telescope in the world.
