Maartje van der Woude appointed Mercator Fellow in Göttingen

Professor of Law and Society Maartje van der Woude has been appointed as a Mercator Fellow at the University of Göttingen’s research group Mobility Rights in the Global Context of Multiple Crises, which studies human rights and migration in times of crisis.

The appointment runs until September 2030 and is part of a large-scale, international research programme in which migration, law and crises are studied from an interdisciplinary perspective.

Research group

The research group Mobility Rights in the Global Context of Multiple Crises is a Research Training Group: a special programme at mainly German universities where early-career researchers work together on a certain theme under the supervision of senior researchers. The programme is organised by the Centre for Global Migration Studies (CeMig), a central point for interdisciplinary research on global migration issues. The research group brings together 12 senior researchers and PhD students from various disciplines, including anthropology, sociology, legal science, politics, philosophy and linguistics.

The group studies how mobility rights worldwide come under pressure in times of multiple crises – such as geopolitical tensions, pandemics, and climate change. The researchers approach these rights from both a legal and a societal perspective. Law is viewed as a dynamic social and political battleground.

Appointment as Mercator Fellow

Mercator Fellows are external scholars who are affiliated with the Research Training Group for the duration of the project. They contribute through workshops and guest lectures, act as an external co-supervisor in one or more PhD projects, and support the international mobility and networking of the PhD candidates.

Van der Woude was selected following an intensive procedure in which the PhD candidates themselves had a decisive say. They chose Van der Woude for her broad expertise at the intersection of migration, border control, law and society, and her extensive experience in interdisciplinary and international research.

As a Mercator Fellow, Van der Woude will regularly stay in Göttingen and actively participate in the research group. For the coming academic year, she has planned a stay in September.
