Working together for a safer workplace - 10 - 14 November inspection of electrical devices
To enhance (fire) safety in our buildings, an inspection will take place from 10 to 14 November 2025. During this week, our Facilities Department team will help ensure a safe and compliant work environment by checking the use of (private) electrical devices that haven’t been approved by them. This applies to all spaces, including offices, meeting rooms, and storage areas, across the following buildings: Gorlaeus Building, Snellius, Huygens, Oort, Sylvius and the Hortus Botanicus. Laboratories will be excluded from this inspection.
What happens to the electrical appliances?
If, during the inspection round, any electrical devices are found that have not been approved or purchased by the Facilities Department, these will be temporarily collected for safety reasons. A note will be left at the spot where the device was found.
You can pick up your device until 1 December 2025 at one of the following locations, or choose to take it home instead:
Gorlaeus Building: at the Expedition (GM.0)
Huygens: at the reception
Sylvius: at the reception
Snellius: at the reception
Hortus Botanicus: to be announced
Allowed or not allowed?
- Allowed: Electrical appliances located in pantries managed by the Facilities Department, such as coffee machines, kettles, refrigerators, dishwashers and microwaves.
 - Not allowed: Electrical appliances that are not managed by the Facilities Department, such as heaters, electric hotplates, kettles, coffee machines, sandwich toasters, air fryers, and similar devices. This applies to all types of (household) equipment in pantries, as well as in offices, meeting rooms, and other areas.

Ready to take action?
To help the inspection run smoothly, we encourage you to take action in advance. Do you have any devices that may not meet the criteria? Please feel free to take them home or hand them in beforehand at one of the collection points.
