At present time, Chilean society is at a crossroads, before the convergence of two phenomenon: on the one hand, the apparent deactivation of a cycle of social mobilizations that, in the recent years, had pushed progressive demands around the right to education, better pensions and gender equality, and which translated in the ongoing process of constitutional renovation. And on the other, the rise of populist-conservative political forces that, articulating a political agenda around issues of order, security and distrust in others and vindicating authoritarian positions, have gained growing social support as shown in the last electoral processes. Based on primary and secondary data, this lecture will portray the panorama of beliefs and attitudes expressed by the youth in Chile regarding the democratic system and authoritarianism, their ways of relating to traditional politics, as well as their attitudes towards gender equality and tolerance. The 50 years since the dictatorial onset constitutes a key moment. This lecture takes the opportunity to incite reflection and discuss the relationship of the new generations with democracy and authoritarianism.

Moderator: Dr. Soledad Valdivia Rivera, Institute of History
