One-off compensation payment and supplement

As of 1 January 2027, ABP’s new pension scheme will come into effect. To ensure a smooth transition to this scheme, ABP may, in certain situations, provide compensation or a pension supplement for employees aged 35 and over.

What changes is ABP making?

In the current pension scheme, all ABP participants accrue the same amount of pension with each euro that they contribute: it makes no difference how old you are. All the money goes into one collective pot, which ABP uses for investment and then later to make pension payments. This will change in the new pension scheme. Instead of everything going into one large, collective pot, everyone will have their own personal pension pot.The contribution you pay goes directly towards your own pension. This makes your pension clearer, as you can see exactly what your contributions and the investment results mean for your future.

Potential impact and one-off pension compensation payment and supplement

Under the new pension scheme, employees aged over 35 have less time to build up the same level of return as employees under 35. ABP may grant a one-off compensation payment to employees aged 35 and over, provided there are sufficient funds in the collective pension pot at the time the new scheme comes into effect:

  • ABP compensation for employees aged 40 and above: If you are employed by Leiden University on 31 December 2026 (or are accruing an ABP pension somewhere else) and are aged 40 years or above on 1 January 2027, you will be eligible for the one-off compensation payment.
  • Extra supplement from ABP for employees aged 35 to 44: If you are employed by Leiden University on 31 December 2026 and are aged 35 to 44 years, you will be eligible for an extra supplement. The supplement is intended to make the transition fairer for this age group.

You can check on the ABP website whether you are eligible for the one-off pension compensation payment and/or supplement and how this is calculated.

Pension compensation and supplementation in different situations

n certain situations, the level of pension compensation and/or supplementation may change. This may occur, for example, if you reduce your working hours in 2026 or leave employment. To get a clear idea of what this could mean in your situation, you can consult the sample calculations on the ABP website.

If you have any further questions, you can contact ABP in various ways for more detailed information. It is also advisable to discuss any plans regarding your employment with your line manager in good time.
