NSE results: high scores for Humanities again

Each year the NSE (National Student Survey) gives students the opportunity to express their opinion on their studies. The results are important not only for improving study programmes but also for helping new students to choose the programme that’s best for them. This year the survey was completed by no fewer than 2,190 students in the Faculty of Humanities: around 30% of all the students in the faculty.

What do students think?

The score for general satisfaction was high: students gave their study programme an average of 3.98 out of 5. Their rating of teachers was particularly noteworthy: with an overall score of 4.04, it was above average for content expertise, didactic skills and involvement.
Themes such as ‘content and organisation of the study programme’, ‘examination and assessment’ and ‘engagement and contact’ were also rated significantly higher than the university average.

What do alumni say?

To gain a clearer picture of the job market position of Humanities graduates, the faculty conducted a career survey of alumni who graduated between 2020 and 2024. The results were positive:

  • 85% found a job within six months.
  • 62% actually found work within two months.
  • 77% are working at academic or higher professional (hbo) level.

Although current students are sometimes doubtful about their job market preparation, our graduates report that they developed a broad set of skills during their studies – and have found these skills to be in great demand.

And what about preparation for the job market?

As in previous years, students felt that ‘preparation for a professional career’ requires some attention. The faculty is continuing to work on this. For example, it has introduced a number of successful project-based courses, where students work in small groups on a project within a topical overall theme, sometimes suggested by an external client. In these courses, students learn transferable skills, such as teamwork, planning, applying knowledge and reflection. The end product may then be, for example, a podcast, an exhibition or an advisory opinion. These project-based courses are designed to meet the demand for more interdisciplinary skills in the curriculum. The faculty also asks the study programmes to reflect each year on their efforts in various areas, including job market preparation and transferable skills.
