Loan audio-visual equipment

For your teaching and research you can usually loan audio-visual equipment, such as a video camera, microphone or audio recorder, from your own Faculty.

See your Faculty’s tab for more information on the use of audio-visual equipment. You can contact the General Services Department for more information on purchasing the equipment you need for your teaching.

For information on the use of audio-visual equipment before and during lectures, you can contact your Faculty video coordinator.

Audiovisual equipment at the Faculty of Science

Because of COVID-19 measures the capacity of the lecture rooms is lower than normal and students might not be allowed to come to campus . This may result in a situation in which some students attend class, while others need to be taught online. Asynchronous teaching might be a solution.

Asynchronous teaching

You might consider asynchronous teaching. You can find inspiration for this on the Teaching Support Gateway and/or consult the teaching advisers in the Science E-learning and Educational Development Support team

Since mid-September 2020 we also have a small studio with a blackboard and greenscreen in which you can pre-record your lectures. Please check out the info on what to expect and how to request a booking.

Live lecturing / recording facilities

Some of the larger lecture rooms on the Bio Science Park have possibilities for live streams / recordings. On the page ‘Weblectures’ you can find the info on which rooms this are, and how to request a live stream or recording.

When to use a webcam kit?

When you are teaching in a room without above mentioned ‘weblecture’ facilities, but with a ‘presentation computer’ you can use one of the many webcam kits we have available at the Faculty. Use these kits in combination with Kaltura Live Rooms or MS Teams to make sure students who participate online can hear and see you (or the blackboard) properly.

The kits consist of a high-quality webcam with built-in microphone, connection cables, tripod and connection instructions.

How to get a webcam kit?

Reserve your kit via the online booking system:

  • Click on the name of the building in the list below to find an available webcam kit and reserve a time slot.

  • In the calendar widget, first select a webcam kit number, then choose a date and timeslot.

  • Fill in your name and email address. You do not have to create an account for a reservation.

  • You can only see the available time slots if you have selected a webcamset, so please try another kit for more time slots if the first kit is not available at the required time.

  • You will receive a confirmation of your booking per email. Please bring this confirmation to the reception desk when you pick up your reserved webcam kit (show it on your phone / bring a printout).

  • You can make several (separate) consecutive bookings. Give yourself enough time to test and try the first time around, but please also consider other teachers needing this equipment.

  • Pick up the webcam kit on the day of your lecture and connect it in your lecture room. Manuals available on this page.

Select your platform

You can use the webcam kit with Kaltura Live Rooms, Microsoft Teams or Microsoft Live Events. We suggest you try out the platform of your choice well ahead of the actual class, so you are familiar with its possibilities and quirks.

Please refer to the info on the Teaching Support Gateway to make a choice between the platforms or contact the Science E-learning and Educational Development Support team

Inform your students

Please remember to inform your students about the platform that you are going to use.

Consult the manuals

The kits are very easy to use. All you have to do is connect the webcam to a USB-port and mount on the tripod or on the computer and you’re ready to go.

If you’d like some assistance, one of our student-employees can help you to set-up the equipment. To request assistance, send an email to seeds@science.leidenuniv.nl, stating the date, building and start time (and preferably the course name) in your message. Please allow 5 working days ahead of the actual lecture for processing and planning on our side.

Disclaimer: we offer this service on basis of best effort and availability. Unfortunately we cannot guarantee assistance.

Technical problems

In case of a technical malfunction of the webcam kit, please contact the AV services via +31 71 527 4740.

For issues of the platforms Kaltura Live Rooms, MS Teams and MS Live events, you can contact the ICT Teacher Support Desk

The webcam kits are a relatively new service, so if you have any questions, tips or remarks on the reservation process, the manual, the information on this website or the actual equipment, please let us know via seeds@science.leidenuniv.nl.
