Environmental awareness at work

The University has ambitious plans for reducing the environmental impact of its activities. To this end we have taken university-wide measures in the form of improved building sustainability, sustainable energy and water-saving measures. As an employee, you can also contribute to lowering the environmental impact.

Energy-saving measures

There are a few simple measures you can take to reduce your energy use at work:

  • Turn off the light when you leave the room, even if you are only gone for fifteen minutes.
  • Lower the thermostat in your office.
  • Choose a well-lit spot for your desk or workplace.
  • Put an energy-saving bulb in your desk lamp.
  • Put your computer in stand-by mode whenever you leave your desk; put it in sleep mode if not in use for more than half an hour.
  • Don’t use a screen saver. Turn off your screen when not in use.
  • Unplug all chargers from the power socket when not in use.
  • Use central facilities, such as multifunctionals for printing, copying and scanning, and coffee corners. These have less impact on the environment.

Water-saving measures

In the coming years, the University aims to reduce its use of clean drinking water. This is something you can also contribute to.

  • Make sure dishwashers are really full before switching them on.
  • Immediately report leaking toilets to your building’s service desk.
  • Use the water-saving option on the toilet.

Waste-reducing measures

The University wishes to reduce the amount of waste it produces and sustainably process the remaining waste. As an employee, you can make sure that your waste is processed in the right way:

  • Put used paper and cardboard in the recycling container. This saves money.
  • Print and copy only when really necessary.
  • Write, print and copy double-sided.
  • Use the notice board or personnel newsletter to make announcements. Not everyone has to receive every single notification on paper.
  • Don’t use disposable items.

Waste segregation guide

Do your paper napkins belong with 'papier' or 'rest'? And what do you do with correction fluid? On the waste segregation guide you find what goes where, and how Leiden University treats your waste.
