Healthy University Week: Spring into action!

Spring is the season of new beginnings: it’s green outside, the days become longer and the natural world buzzes with new life. It’s a wonderful season to get outdoors and enjoy the fresh air and sunshine. A time to leave those screens and meeting rooms behind and get moving.

Did you know that a few minutes of exercise every half hour works wonders for your brain? You improve your vitality and find yourself more able to cope with your work and all its challenges. To make this easier and more appealing, Healthy University Week is being held from 13 to 17 May 2024 and the theme is Spring into action!

Once again we have put together a wide programme of sports, relaxation, exercise and inspiration. The activities are made possible in part thanks to the University Sports Centre and My Daily Lifestyle through Zorg en Zekerheid. Where possible these activities will take place outdoors. Sign up and join one or two sessions and experience what outdoor exercise can do for your energy levels.

Some of the activities will also be available for students.

Monday 13 May

Time Activity Location
08:30-09:00  Pilates 
In Pilates you will do low-impact exercises at slow speed. This mainly involves using your core: your abdominal muscles. You will not only become stronger but will also develop a better posture and more stamina.

12:00-13:00  Lunchwalk through the outdoors
Bring your own lunch for this wonderful and inspiring lunch walk in the centre of Leiden. This is a great way to stay active during a work day and to get to know new people.

13:00-13:30  Strenght training for your brain
In this inspiration session you will do fun, playful exercises in the form of “brain teasers” to gain insight into how your brain works. You will also engage in relaxation exercises that you can do at any time, even during the working day.

Tennis is a fun and versatile sport. What do you want to work on? Sprinting fast to get the ball, jumping high, a powerful backhand or the perfect serve? In this clinic you will receive valuable tips and tricks from an experienced coach. Sign up on your own or with colleagues!

In a demanding society there is often little space and attention for yourself. Stress and fatigue symptoms can develop as a result of this. Participate in this workshop that combines exercises from Yoga and Tai Chi. These exercises will create better balance and cooperation between mind and body.

This inspiration session starts with a short fitness test that anyone can do. Within two minutes you will have insight into your own fitness. How much exercise is enough and how do you integrate exercise into your daily life? Our coach explains the four exercise guidelines and shows you how to apply them. A balance exercise while brushing your teeth? A fit posture at work? A number of exercises that can easily be done anywhere will inspire you and get you into action!

Do you want less stress and more focus? With mindfulness you learn to become aware of your experiences. Through exercises you learn to notice what is happening in your body and in your environment.

Do you also easily fall prey to stress and fatigue? Yin Yang Yoga is a combination of calm and powerful yoga and creates better balance and cooperation between mind and body.

During this bootcamp you will work on your endurance and train different muscle groups using interval training to music. You will also do running and jumping exercises and work with dumbbells. This varied approach ensures effective cardio and strength building and delivers fast results.

Exercise for free at USC

During this week it is Open Sports Week at the University Sports Center. This means that everyone can exercise for free at all USC branches from May 13 to 19. You can also take out a very affordable summer subscription at USC during this period.
