Last year, in the 2022 Administrative Agreement on Higher Education and Science, the Minister for Education, Culture and Science announced a number of new instruments: the starter and incentive grants. The Minister’s aim with these new instruments is to invest in greater stability and predictability of research funding for universities and university medical centres.

Starters grants at Humanities

From 2023, the Faculty of Humanities will receive an annual sum of three million euros in starter grants. University lecturers who from 1 January 2022 or later have an employment contract for a minimum of 0.7 FTE, of which 0.2 FTE is for teaching, are eligible for a starter grant. Each grant is worth € 240,000 and includes a sum of € 60,000 for overhead costs.

Intensive discussions between institutes and Faculty Board

Over the past few months the Faculty Board and the Management Teams of the institutes have had intensive discussions to decide how best to deploy these resources. The resources are intended to contribute to reducing the pressure of work, promote broader recognition and reward of staff and facilitate collaboration.

Plans approved

Each institute Management Team has drawn up an implementation plan for the starter grants for their institute. On 16 May, these plans were approved by the Faculty Board, and the institutes can now work on implementing their plan. This means that the first starter grants can be applied for shortly.

The procedure for applying for the starter grants is different for each institute.
