PhD candidates and early-career researchers: join a data science and AI challenge in Madrid

Apply now for the Una Europa Data Science and AI Challenge for Social Welfare, from 22-24 July in Madrid. This interdisciplinary programme invites PhD candidates and early-career researchers to develop ethical AI solutions for social welfare.

During the Challenge, you will:

  • Work with curated datasets, validation tools, and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU)’s AI for Good publications.
  • Gain hands-on experience in ethical AI design through co-creation and continuous feedback.
  • Receive recognition through awards for technical excellence and ethical integrity.
  • Explore the impact of the EU AI Act and its relevance to responsible AI development.
  • Expand your research and professional skills, including teamwork and presenting.

Participants will also be invited to submit their projects for a special issue of the Journal of Artificial Intelligence and Computing Applications.

What does it cost to participate?

Accommodation and meals are fully covered. Participants need to arrange their transportation to Madrid and pay a €100 tuition fee.

Am I eligible to take part?

All PhD candidates and early-career researchers from Leiden University and LUMC are welcome to apply. Possible participants could include:

  • Computer Science and AI specialists integrating ethical frameworks into development practices.
  • Data scientists ensuring their analyses consider social impact.
  • Social Science researchers studying technology's effects on communities.
  • Law researchers and legal professionals exploring AI regulations.
  • Philosophy researchers with expertise in ethics and societal implications.
  • Public Policy experts analysing governance frameworks.
Is funding available?

Applicants are kindly asked to first check whether their faculty or department can cover the cost of registration and travel to Madrid. Many faculties have internal budgets or schemes that can support this, so please explore these options before applying.

Our local Una Europa team may also be able to provide limited support, but only if faculty funding is not possible. 

Applicants will receive more details after they have been selected to attend. You are still welcome to apply while you check options with your faculty. Please note that we cannot respond to individual funding questions before selection takes place.

Visit the Una Europa website for full information, including a detailed programme and a link to the application form. Complete the form by 22:00 CET on 17 April 2026. Selected candidates will be notified no later than 1 May 2026.
