Leadership
Strong leadership is essential for building an open and learning organisation.
An open and learning university requires effective and connected leadership. That is why the university invests in managers who provide direction and create space for collaboration, as well as in staff who take responsibility for their own development. Leiden University uses a leadership model based on four competences that can be used in different roles across the university: building connections, collaborating, taking responsibility and pushing boundaries.
License to Lead
We invest in leadership through License to Lead. License to Lead is the standard leadership development programme for all managers at Leiden University. This programme ensures that every manager has the knowledge, skills and support needed to help staff develop, enable teams to succeed and achieve our shared goals. HR offers a range of leadership development programmes, as well as access to a selected group of senior coaches that focus on leadership and team development.

Leadership with impact - part of License to Lead
The Leadership with impact course starts with deepening your self-knowledge by learning more about your personal qualities, pitfalls and automatic behaviour patterns, both conscious and unconscious. This forms the basis for leading others. You will learn how to implement your vision and encourage integrative decision-making, as well as work on your coaching skills and interview techniques. These are your most important tools as a manager for motivating and guiding others in their professional development. You will also acquire tools for creating a safe and pleasant work atmosphere in which everyone feels heard.
