Multimodal MRI methods to examine pharmacological effects of cannabinoids.

Matthijs Bossong will present on multimodal MRI methods to examine pharmacological effects of cannabinoids. Examining the neuropsychopharmacology of cannabinoids: a Magnetic Resonance Imaging approach’. Matthijs bossong studied the effects of THC using ASL and resting state fMRI. Bossong’s recent work examined the effects of cannabidiol treatment of psychosis patients on brain function as measured with MRS, reward fMRI and resting state connectivity.

Matthijs Bossong obtained his doctorate in Utrecht for an extensive pharmacological neuroimaging study in which he studied the acute effects of cannabis on the brain using various neuroimaging techniques. Bossong spent three years at the Institute of Psychiatry at King's College London working on the neurobiology of psychotic disorders and investigating the effects of potential new antipsychotic medications such as cannabidiol. Supported by several personal research grants, Bossong has been able to continue his research on cannabis, psychoses and new antipsychotic drugs at the Department of Psychiatry of the University Medical Center in Utrecht. In Leiden, he is currently managing a pharmacological neuroimaging project focussing on the manipulation of nocebo effects in the context of itch processing.
