The research group Terrorism and Political Violence, part of Leiden University’s Institute of Security and Global Affairs (ISGA) invites you to a seminar on the “hybridisation” of radicalisation by Dr. Christopher Kehlet Ebbrecht (Aarhus University). Please see below for details and a link to register.

About the event

Recent developments in the terrorism landscape seem to indicate that the ideologies and narratives with which terrorists and extremists identify are increasingly diffuse and idiosyncratic, and more difficult to categorise. How should we interpret these developments and which concepts help us understand this phenomenon? What does this supposed trend mean for professionals working in violence prevention? Are existing risk assessment procedures and interventions still "fit for purpose"? And what does this trend require in terms of research, policy, and collaboration between different stakeholders in the assessment and prevention chain?

The meeting will consist of a presentation of findings a literature review on the "hybridisation" of radicalisation, a reflection on the implications of the results of the study for research and violence prevention practice, and a joint, open discussion with room for questions and exchange amongst the speaker and attendees.

The presentation is open to researchers and professionals working in the practice of counterterrorism, threat management and violence prevention.

About the speaker

Christopher Kehlet Ebbrecht works as a postdoctoral researcher at Department of Psychology and Behavioural Sciences of Aarhus University (Denmark) – the department where he also obtained his PhD. His research seeks to understand the social and psychological mechanisms underlying different forms of societal conflict and violence. Christopher’s primary area of research focuses on violence committed by individuals (so-called “lone actors”), but he also researches related topics such as radicalization and violent extremism, political violence and protest, as well as polarization and marginalization.
