FSW Education Festival 2025: student welfare, fair assessment and AI

On 28 October 2025, the FSW Education Festival returned, and brought together teachers, researchers, and students for an afternoon full of inspiration, dialogue, and hands-on learning.

From thought-provoking keynotes on fair assessment in the age of AI and teaching resilience, to presentations on AI-assisted grading, student perspectives on AI, self-care for students, and the interactive Student Plaza workshop; the program offered something for everyone.

We warmly thank all participants and visitors for their enthusiasm and engagement! Below you will find a photo report, along with selected key takeaways from the sessions.

'Assessment is only fair when the principles behind it are fair—and fair principles are those no one can reasonably object to. In our research, we’re exploring how generative AI can support assessments that are valid, transparent, and truly meaningful for students’ lives.'
Josette Daemen (FGGA) in her keynote on Fair Educational Assessment in the Age of AI

'Generative AI’s strength lies in its reasoning: when predictions fail, it breaks down problems and solves them. That’s why it’s so powerful in education—for example in Leiden University, we use a bot that lets students safely practice assessing suicidal tendencies, focusing on skills through simulation.'
Julian van der Kraats (ISSC) about AI in Education

'We have to understand resilience as a process, but also view it in relation to the circumstances a person is in. These circumstances aren’t just short-lived events, but can also be more enduring personal conditions.'
Tim Mainhard (IPW) in his keynote on Teaching resilience

'I tried to move beyond the simple idea that using AI is misconduct, and instead look at what actually happens in practice. It turns out that students are developing quite sophisticated ways of using AI, thinking through ethical frameworks, and having many different reasons for using AI.'
Masha Kunakhovich (CADS) about her thesis The student perspective on the use of AI
