FSW Education Festival 2025

Join us on 28 October for the FSW Education Festival – the perfect opportunity to hear from colleagues who have developed and implemented educational innovations. This year's themes are AI in Education and Student Wellbeing. Listen to the keynotes, attend a workshop and meet colleagues and students during this inspiring afternoon! We will conclude with drinks and an information market.

Keynote: Fair Educational Assessment in the Age of AI – Josette Daemen (FGGA), 1B.01

In the FAIR-ASSESS project an interdisciplinary team from Leiden University works towards principles for the use of generative AI by students and teachers in educational assessments, so that student performance is assessed in the most fair way. Josette Daemen, postdoctoral researcher and leader of the project, will tell more about fair use of GenAI in assessments and lead an exercise in deliberation to arrive at rules for our assessment practices.

AI-assisted grading: opportunity or challenge? – Julian van der Kraats (ISSC), 1B.01

Grading assignments and tests is a time-consuming part of our educational system. While multiple-choice exams can already be graded automatically by ANS, grading assignments and open-ended exams is still very time-consuming. With the rise of GenAI, the use of AI for grading texts seems like a logical solution. But is AI actually capable of doing this, and is it permitted under the AI Act?  

Julian van der Kraats, Product Owner AI and Automation at the ISSC, discusses developments in AI-assisted grading within and without our university, and the challenges that need to be overcome in order to really get started with it. 

 

Presenting the Student Plaza… *jazz hands* - Janita Ravesloot, Justin Sijtsma, Rosalinde Spitters (FSW), 1A.37

Since September 2024, the Student Plaza, located on the ground floor at the rear of the FSW building, has been the place to go for everything related to student support and student welfare. Here, the Student Service Centre (OSC), the POPcorner, the Career Service, the Community Engagement Service, the Honours College and the Personal Development Centre offer support to students in all possible areas. In addition, the Student Plaza is a centre of expertise in the field of Diversity, Inclusion and Wellbeing for staff, and provides training on these themes for target groups such as mentors, tutors, lecturers and support staff. Come and meet the people at the Student Plaza and find out what they have to offer.

Thesis presentation Masha Kunakhovich (CADS) & panel discussion the student perspective on the use of AI, 1B.01 

Want to know what students and teachers really think about AI and how they use it? For her master thesis at cultural Anthropology and Developmental Sociology Masha Kunakhovich studied the use of AI among teachers and students. She will present her findings during the session and then moderate a panel discussion on this topic with representatives of all the FSW study associations. 

 

Student Self-care: a necessary conversation – Kelly Ziemer (PSY), 1A.37 

Students in our clinical master tracks are trained to go out into the world and work with clients whose problems and stories can be painful and can impact their own well-being. How do you leave your work at work and not bring it home with you. How do we teach our students to cope with the emotional work and burden their profession places on them? Kelly Ziemer, Assistant Professor at Psychology, has won both a Grassroots and a Grass Shoots grant to investigate and implement educational innovations to address this question. In her presentation she’ll share her experiences and provide an insight into the results of her work on the topic of student self-care.

Keynote: Teaching Resilience – Tim Mainhard (IPW), 1B.01

n 2023, the university launched the 13 cross-disciplinary skills that all Leiden students should acquire, divided into three categories: skills we use in our interactions with the world around us, also known as (meta-)cognitive skills; skills we use in our interactions with each other, also known as interpersonal skills; and skills we use in our interactions with ourselves, also known as intrapersonal skills. This last category is the focus of this keynote. 

Strengthening resilience during the study period is essential. Resilience is a combination of flexibility and self-confidence that enables individuals to cope with and recover from change, unpredictability, stress, and adversity. It reflects the balance between the ability to cope with undesirable outcomes or changes and the resilience to maintain personal boundaries. This skill helps students cope with setbacks and recover from them without exhausting themselves.  

In the current moment, with many geopolitical threats, climate change, polarisation, and social unrest, this skill is all the more essential. The question is how this skill can be strengthened in educational practice. How do young people develop resilience? As a teacher, how can you use your interpersonal behaviour to support students in strengthening this skill? Tim Mainhard, professor of Educational Sciences, will discuss this in more detail.

FeedBACK and FORTH – Liza van den Bosch (IPW)

In 2024 Liza van den Bosch received a Grass Shoots to develop a method that, on the one hand, helps students ask better feedback questions, thereby increasing their feedback literacy, and, on the other hand, enables teachers to give targeted feedback in an efficient manner. Come and learn more about the successful results, which Liza will also be presenting at the SURF Onderwijsdagen in November. 
 

Online collaboration tool – Marit Guda, Kim Stroet, Tirza Smits (IPW) 

Students are increasingly being asked to work on assignments in groups. This requires skills that not all students have mastered. To support students in this, Guda, Stroet en Smits have developed and piloted an online collaboration tool, in which students are asked during the collaboration how the collaboration is going and to reflect on the process. In 2025, they received a Grassroots grant to further develop this tool.
